You don’t NEED to use a mod manager to manage. There are other options here but I have no experience with them:.
Model import works with 2014 but export does not. 5.48 works with 3ds max 2013 or earlier which is no longer available, unfortunately.

I’ve successfully installed it on Windows 7 and 8.1 (with the included SQL 2005 - click through to ignore the error during installation) (with Origins Ultimate retail version) so I know for sure it still works that far.
Refer to the installation guide and troubleshooting guides on the Toolset wiki if you run into problems. I’ve had to delete cruft from modules\Single Player\override\toolsetexport as well (not editing Single Player, but exporting resources owned by Single Player). Note that it’s not just packages\core\override\toolsetexport that occasionally gets filled up with garbage files.
